Dental Cutting and Drilling Tool Pressure Indicator and Alert System

Pressure Indicator Provides Feedback on the Amount of Pressure Applied During a Procedure

This pressure indicator can be incorporated into high-speed rotary cutting and drilling tools to provide dentists real-time feedback on the amount of pressure they are exerting during a procedure. A dentist applying too much pressure during a procedure can damage the tooth; too little pressure lengthens the time it takes to do the procedure. This pressure indicator could improve dental hand tools, which had a global value of $1.12 billion in 2020 and should exceed $1.9 billion in value by 2028. Dentists currently rely on their experience or pressure indicator pastes, which require additional work and cleanup, to know when they are applying the right amount of pressure during a given procedure.

Researchers at the University of Florida have developed a pressure indicator for application on dental tools that provides real-time feedback to the dentist while performing procedures. The pressure indicator uses sensors incorporated throughout the device and a visual display or haptic feedback to alert the dentist if the pressure applied is outside the pre-determined pressure threshold.

Application

Pressure indicator for application in dental cutting and drilling tools to provide the dentist with real-time feedback on the amount of pressure applied during a procedure

Advantages

  • Minimizes injuries to the patient, improving patient outcomes
  • Removes the need for pressure indicator paste, reducing the work and cleanup

Technology

This pressure indicator is designed to be incorporated into high-speed rotary dental cutting and drilling tools to provide pressure feedback to the dentist while performing procedures. It uses sensors inside the device to monitor the forces on the rotating parts of dental cutting and drilling tools. Pressure feedback is provided to the user by a visual display or via haptic feedback.
